Lori Burson Murga makes the paper!!
Job description: I am a glass artist and I specialize in Italian glass. I enjoy lampworking, cold working and fusing glass for jewelry and art pieces.
Background: I have been working with glass for about the last 10 years. I took my first class from Ed and Nancy Sharr. That’s when I became obsessed with glass. Since then, I have studied under famous glass artist, Loren Stump. I have also taken classes from Lori Berry.
Notable achievements: My glass designs have been published in Better Homes and Gardens magazine four times. I travel the country selling my work at different trade shows. I am a three-time published author in Modern Arabian Horse magazine and TrailBlazer magazine.
Why I do what I do: Melting glass is the most mesmerizing thing you can do. It takes total concentration to manipulate and shape molten glass.
What I do to get away from work: I love to ride and show my horse. I also love to ride bicycles with my family and play with my greyhound, Goldie.
How I give back to the community: I am a volunteer and active member on the board of Heartland Greyhound Adoption. I also like teaching young people about the joy of melting glass.
Words to live by: “It’s not what you break, but what you can fix that make you a great artist” – Loren Stump.
Best place to entertain clients or colleagues: My Studio, because the wine, laughter and creativity flow freely.
Best business book I’ve read lately: “Crush It” by Gary Vaynerchuk. He has an in-your-face approach to building and marketing your business.
What Iowa can do to attract more people like me: I would love to see Iowa host a glass artists’ festival where people from all over the country would come to share, teach, sell and expand on their craft.
My mentor: If I had to pick one artist, Loren Stump is it. He is an amazing artist and teacher of glass. I would also have to say my husband, Steve, as well my friends who support and encourage me daily.
My leadership philosophy: I always listen, whether I am helping a client design something special, teaching a student or, just having a conversation with a friend.
