MOLINE — Robert “Bob” Liddy, 86, of Moline, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at OSF, Peoria, Ill., after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27. Bob’s family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, at the cathedral in the Great Hall. The family asks that in lieu of other gifts in Bob’s honor, memorials be made to Camp Courageous, P.O. Box 418, Monticello, IA 52310, or to a charity of your choice.
Bob was born in 1923 in Monticello, the son of John and Agnes Liddy. He married Jane Davenport on August 23, 1947.
After graduating from Monticello High as an outstanding athlete, he attended the University of Iowa where ultimately he attained a Master’s Degree. While at Iowa, Bob played football as a starting “watch-charm” guard in 1942, ’43 and ’46. “The Chicago Tribune” recognized him as the “Most Valuable to the Team.”
The interim break was spent in the South Pacific as a Navy man.

His career in education spanned nearly 40 years as a teacher, coach and administrator, which all began at old Davenport High School in 1948 as a football line coach and biology teacher. Later he moved to Fairfield, Iowa, as a head football and basketball coach. Then on to Coe College and Kansas State as a line coach, returning to Davenport when West High opened in 1960. He served as head football coach until being named Principal in 1967 for 15 years. He rounded out his career as AD of the Davenport School District, retiring in 1986. "His deep faith, humility and smile was the man called Bob.
Bob is survived by his wife, Jane, children, Jalayne (Mrs. R. Kent Riewerts), Janifer (Mrs. Ronald Ruhl), and the Very Reverend Jeffrey Liddy, seven very loved grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
Bob touched the lives of many and the hearts of more.

He married Jane Davenport on August 23, 1947. He was an outstanding basketball and football athlete in high school playing quarterback for Monticello High. He obtained a master's degree from the University of Iowa and played football as a starting “watch-charm” guard in 1942, ’43 and ’46. He was co-captain in ’43 when the Chicago Tribune recognized him as the Most Valuable Player on the team. The interim break was spent in the South Pacific as a Navy man. His career in education spanned nearly 40 years as a teacher, coach and administrator which all began at Davenport High School in 1948 as a football line coach and biology teacher. He coached at D.H.S. in 1948 and 1949. He then moved to Fairfield, Iowa, to serve as head football and basketball coach from 1950 through 1955, then on to Coe College (with Wally Schwank) from ‘56-’59 and from there to Kansas State University in 1960 to be the line coach (with Bus Mertes). He returned to Davenport when West High opened in 1960. He served as head football coach for 15 years until being named principal in 1967. He rounded out his career as A.D. of the Davenport School District, retiring in 1986. He died at the age of 86 on June 13, 2009 after a brief illness.
