KWilliams - June 29th, 2023
As submitted by Kathy Markham McCoy in 2004: Darrell died on September 26, 1988 at the age of 28 (he was born in 1960). The obit isn't online anymore (the archives don't go back that far). Darrell died from complications of AIDS, though his family preferred to say his "official" cause of death was cancer (he had developed Kaposi's Sarcoma and was undergoing chemotherapy for it). Several of his friends assisted me in creating a quilt block for him to add to the national Names Project, the "AIDS Quilt" you may be familiar with. I had lost touch with Darrell for several years, but bumped into a mutual friend who informed me Darrell was ill. I thank God that I was able to be with him for a few months before he passed. Back in those days, AIDS was still a horribly feared disease...I remember the first time I walked into his hospital room at Genesis East & gave him a hug, he cried. He said that not many people wanted to touch him, they were afraid they might catch it. He maintained a fantastic sense of humor to the end, with his nickname for me being "Giraffe" b/c of my height, and his being "Pengy" since he said he walked like a penguin. Darrell was cremated with his mother retaining his ashes. He had a beautiful memorial service with laughter through the tears. I still think of him often, especially on his birthday (July 29th) and the anniversary of his passing. Note: his obituary has since been found with the online services of Newspapers dot com.

Derek Knowler - January 26th, 2021
To my very dear friend. I miss you a lot. You were one of the best cowboys I've ever met and one of the best friends a man could have. We traveled down the road many miles together, from Bowling Green, KY. to Cannon Falls ,MN. and all points in between. You were an outstanding bullfighter who would sacrifice yourself for any cowboy.  Your dog R. C. would keep us awake.  He ended up being a great dog in clown acts.  Till I see you again in heaven,
keep the saddles oiled and the trails open.   Derek Knowler

FACULTY Dr Paul Johnson

Birth Date: 1939-07-24
Deceased Date: 2020-08-01
Obituary:
Dr. Paul Edward Johnson held many titles — loving Husband, proud Father, fun Grandfather, loyal Friend, accomplished and dedicated Educator. On August 1, 2020 at Kavanugh Hospice in Des Moines after a three-year health decline following a massive stroke, he left us peacefully surrounded by his family.
Paul was born July 24, 1939 in Clinton, Iowa to Paul and Gwendolyn (Peterson) Johnson. During his early years of high school, he became a radio broadcaster at stations KCLN and KROS in Clinton. He was a 1957 Clinton High School graduate where he was involved in many activities, including being the editor of the yearbook, The Clintonian. He also lifeguarded and managed the Clinton City Pool.

He attended college at Drake University as well as Upper Iowa University in Fayette. He graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1961, while working full-time as a radio broadcaster at KOEL radio in Oelwein, Iowa. Education was a valued treasure to Paul, therefore it was no surprise when he earned his Masters, Specialist and PhD degrees from The University of Iowa.

Paul was united in marriage to Kathleen Shields Johnson at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids on August 18, 1962. From then on Paul and Kay were inseparable. He was thrilled with the birth of their daughter Jyll in 1967 and fully embraced fatherhood.

The Johnsons accepted teaching positions with the Davenport Schools in 1962, Paul's being at Davenport West in the Social Studies Department. He soon started announcing football and basketball games, which continued until he moved into administration. Dr. J's enthusiasm for the games and the students was legendary.

He wore many hats within Davenport Schools and was proud to be the first Principal of North High School and all of the hard work that went into starting a new 5A high school. Other titles included: teacher, assistant principal, Director of Athletics, Principal of MidCity (Alternative) High School, Director of Secondary Education and Director of West Side Schools. He retired in 2005 after a 45-year long career in education. He was asked to return as a substitute administrator and did so for five years, filling in where needed. Being an adjunct instructor at Palmer Junior College, St. Luke's School of Nursing and at Saint Ambrose University was something else he enjoyed.

Obituary:
Vickie Hicks
( August 08, 1961 - July 19, 2023 )

Vickie Sue Hicks, age 61, of BlueGrass, Iowa, passed away surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 . A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Blue Grass Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at the church. Burial will take place in Blue Grass Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Kings Harvest Animal Shelter or the Blue Grass Presbyterian Church.
Vickie was born August 8, 1961, the daughter of Ray and Donna (McKibbin) Hicks, Davenport, Iowa. Vickie’s life was a sum of family, faith and friends. An active member of the Blue Grass Presbyterian Church, Vickie participated in presenting children’s time during church service, sharing in the responsibility of teaching the adult Sunday school class and providing baked goods for after service fellowship.
Employed at Bowman and Associates in Moline Illinois for 27 years, Vickie and her co-workers were far more than office mates. Together, this “small office with big results” created a second family that stood strong together and weathered all of life’s ups and downs in both their professional and personal lives.
Vickie was a founding member of The Blue Grass Historical Society. As the historian, Vickie kept accurate and detailed records of all events, both large and small taking place in Blue Grass. She was proud of the community she called home. An animal lover, Vickie supported Kings Harvest Animal Shelter and cared for many of her own pets. It’s well documented throughout her photos that any animal she brought home won the pet lottery. In the summer months, Vickie could be found tending her many flower gardens, decorating the lawn to celebrate upcoming holidays, taking a spoiled dog on golf cart rides, and wistfully listening to wind chimes in the backyard of her childhood home. Although Vickie had many friends, she cherished her friendships of over 50 years with the“Lunch Girls”. From elementary school to today, these ladies built a legacy of sisterhood that stood the test of time.
Family members who are continuing to honor Vickie are her parents,Ray and Donna Hicks, Blue Grass; siblings, Jeffery (Janet) Hicks, Muscatine, Iowa, and Peggy (Jeff) Patch, Coal Valley, Illinois; nephew, Jacob (Ayla) Hicks, Bunker Hill, Illinois; nieces, Megan (Luke) Sohm, State Center, Iowa, Jordan Patch, Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Allison (Colin Lorenz) Patch, East Moline, Illinois; great nephews, Morgen and Zane Hicks and Kellen Shriver.
